Fix: You can’t connect to the file share because it’s not secure.
Error:
You can’t connect to the file share because it’s not secure. This share requires the obsolete SMB1 protocol, which is unsafe and could expose your system to attack. Your system requires SMB2 or higher. For more info on resolving this issue, see: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=852747Cause of this error:
This error is basically due to the SMB1 protocol not enabled on the system. SMB1 is no longer enabled in Windows 10 version 1709 or later. Because SMB1 is a quite old protocol, security threats like ransomware and other malware may use it to creep into your system. So as a precaution, Microsoft has not allowed Windows 10 versions to have SMB1 protocol enabled by default. It has been replaced by SMBv2 and later.Solution:
Enabling the SMBv1 Protocol in Windows 10.The SMB 1 protocol is a very obsolete protocol. A wise suggestion would be to temporarily enable the protocol and disable it once the job is done. Enable the SMB1 protocol by performing the following steps:
- Open Control Panel.
- Click on Programs.
- Click on Turn Windows features on or off.
- Expand the SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support option.
- Check the SMB 1.0/CIFS Client option.
- Click the OK button.
- Click the Restart now button.
After
completing these steps, you'll once again be able to see and connect to the network
devices running the old protocol on your local network from your Windows 10
computer.
